Birthmarks are coloured marks on the skin, there are many different kinds, the medical term for birthmark is naevus, or naevi if there are several birthmarks. Birthmarks are found in different skin layers, and consist of different cells.
Common kinds of birthmarks don’t develop into cancer, there’s only very few kinds that are capable of developing into cancer. One of the dangerous kinds is if the individual get brown/ black moles, that develop at birth or in the first few months of the infants life.
In the previous ten years the amount of people diagnosed with cancer have increased with 63%, and increasing number of young women are diagnosed with it. Every year about 200 Danish women, from 15 to 39 years old, are diagnosed with cancer in birthmarks.
In women birthmark cancer is most likely to appear on arms and legs. If you want to try to avoid the disease you should protect you self with sunscreen. To give a diagnosis, it is required to keep an eye on the shape and colour of the birthmark.
On the graphs you can see that in both Denmark and Iceland the incidents of birthmarkcancer for women are overtaken by men at the age of 55 years. One of the reasons for this is that the symptoms of the illness becomes visible slower with men than with women.
